A deceased person’s phone or tablet
A phone contains more than just contacts, photos, movies, and music. The contents also provide access to everything the owner no longer receives physical mail for, such as digital services, accounts, subscriptions, and email, often necessary for settling transactions. This also includes online (storage) services and social media, as well as warranty certificates, accumulated points, store credits, and cryptocurrency holdings.
Of course, you can block bank transfers, but this also terminates these services, meaning you can no longer access anything and the contents are lost forever.
Beware!
There are, of course, plenty of companies and software that (promise to) delete a phone code; the result is almost always that you also lose all your original data permanently!

#TIP 1 – Try it yourself
Of course, surviving relatives can certainly try a number of (swipe) codes themselves, but keep in mind that the device will be temporarily blocked if there are too many incorrect attempts. The blockage lasts longer the more often you enter an incorrect access code. If you persist despite this, the device *could* be completely wiped, and you will no longer be able to access anything.
#Tip 3 – Two-step verification (2FA)
Phones and associated phone numbers are also increasingly being used for security with so-called two-step verification, where you receive a code on your phone when you log in somewhere. However, if the phone subscription has been cancelled, those codes naturally never arrive again.
#Tip 5 – SIM, PIN- and PUKcode
Although it is convenient to keep or switch phone plans, nowadays there is virtually no precious data left on the SIM card.
You can find more information in the article about the SIM, PIN and PUK code.
#Tip 2 – Do not cancel the phone subscription!
It can be useful not to immediately cancel the phone subscription after a death, but to have the provider convert it, for example via a contract transfer, to prepaid, SIM-only, or a cheaper subscription in the name of a surviving relative.
This allows anyone who is not yet aware of the death to still call the number they know, and you, as a surviving relative, can still speak to these people.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Below you will find the most frequently asked questions about access to a phone after death.
How long does an examination take?
An investigation of a phone takes at least 1 week and can extend to several months. This is because we have to try every possible option with our equipment to determine the code. If you know that, for example, a 6-digit code has a total of 1 million possibilities, and you also know that a phone often blocks if you enter a code more than x times in a short period, you understand that such an investigation can take a while.
Due to high demand, the average investigation duration is currently between 2 and 6 weeks.
What is the chance that you will manage to find the phone's code?
Upon an initial request, we can usually make a good estimate based on make, model, and type whether it is realistic to retrieve the passcode.
If there is an 80% chance or more that we can retrieve the code without the risk of data loss, we will let you know.
However, there may be circumstances that cannot be fully foreseen in advance. Examples include a recent security update from the manufacturer, an installed custom ROM, additional security settings, or a device that has been permanently blocked after entering an incorrect code too many times.
Should it still not be technically possible to gain access at that time, you can choose to store the device with us for a maximum of one year. As soon as new technical possibilities arise within that period and access is eventually achieved, any previously paid investigation costs will be deducted.
You can, of course, choose to receive the device back at any time.
Please note! At this moment, we do not (yet) support Apple devices newer than the iPhone 8 or iPads from 2018 onwards.
Kan ik de telefoon zelf brengen en ophalen?
With our BASIC service, you are responsible for ensuring the phone reaches us.
This can be done by sending it (by registered mail), but it is also possible to drop off or pick up the phone—by appointment only—at our head office in Maastricht or a location in Lelystad.
Our PREMIUM service includes free pickup and return of the phone throughout Europe and a few countries outside of it.
What are the research costs and what are they for?
We always charge the investigation costs of €149.00 prior to the investigation. These costs will be deducted from the total price if we successfully recover the access code.
If we are (still) unsuccessful, you can indicate whether we may keep the phone for up to 1 year so that we can keep trying again and again during that period using hardware and software updates we receive during that year.
Naturally, you can also choose to have the phone returned immediately or in the interim if the investigation has not (yet) yielded the desired result.
There is (free) software that can do this too!
There are indeed many (online) companies and obscure programs to be found that promise the same thing and have exclusively positive reviews.
You are, of course, free to try this first, but… The result is often that the phone is reset to factory settings; while you get rid of the code, you simultaneously lose all your data! Furthermore, identity fraud is a lurking danger.
What are the risks associated with this service?
Making a phone equipped with an unknown code accessible is highly specialized custom work and inevitably entails technical risks.
Due to our techniques, the phone can become very hot, posing a risk of malfunctions, data loss, or permanent damage; the phone may sometimes even fail due to the number of attempts.
In some cases, the phone must be (partially) disassembled, which may invalidate the warranty on the phone or mean that water resistance can no longer be guaranteed.
And although you probably cannot do anything with the phone now anyway, Digital Life Legacy cannot be held liable in any way for damage to the phone or loss of data, except in cases of intent or deliberate recklessness. Naturally, we do everything we can to minimize risks as much as possible and inform you as clearly as possible in advance.
Do you also carry out repairs?
We only repair phones if it is necessary to access the code, and only after consultation with and permission from the client.
The costs for this are the responsibility of the client.
Can you also conduct additional (forensic) investigations?
If there are questions following a death, for example as a result of suicide or if specific questions are involved, we can provide an additional ADVANCED forensic investigation and report regarding the phone with our partners.
This allows even more detailed information to become available, and enables advanced searching of accounts, passwords, contacts, chats and communication, performed searches, deleted files, timeline activity, etc.
Please contact us separately regarding these options.
Are your services covered by insurance?
It may be necessary to gain access to a phone for various reasons.
Not only for processing grief, but also for settling administration, keeping an overview of accounts, subscriptions, and memberships, or gaining insight into assets or debts.
In some situations, (part of) these costs may be covered by the discretionary amount within a funeral insurance policy.
Additionally, it is sometimes possible to claim under your own contents, equipment, or valuables insurance: the phone has, after all, become your property (such as by operation of law, via a will, or a certificate of inheritance).
We can assist you in providing the necessary information or documentation, but we cannot guarantee that an insurer will actually provide reimbursement.
What else do you need physically besides the phone?
We physically need the phone at our research location.
Except for computer equipment, we do not need chargers, cables, packaging, cases, SIM cards, etc. for phones and tablets.

Android phones
These days, almost all phones, except Apple, run the Android operating system. Most users also have a Google email account (Gmail). Perhaps a computer or laptop was also used, for which you know the username and password? This way, you can check whether the data on your phone has recently been synchronized or backed up with your computer, making it less necessary to access your phone.
Apple’s iCloud
When an Apple device has been used, there is always storage via Apple’s iCloud (www.icloud.com).Backups of the data on the device are often stored there, but you can also often immediately view photos, videos, email, and notes. To log in to icloud.com, a username (email address) and password are required, and a two-step verification is often performed on a trusted device. You could try ‘Forgotten Password’ to see if that gets you any further…
If you know your Apple ID and password, but you can’t get through with 2-step verification, you can also try these tips from Apple: https://support.apple.com/nl-nl/102633
Computer and Laptop Options
Was a computer or laptop perhaps still in use by the original owner?
Sometimes there are clues on it, data has been synchronized, or a backup can be found, which may provide access to data, even clues to a phone’s code.
If you are unable to access the computer or laptop due to a physical defect or unknown password, we can often help.
More information and prices for making computers and laptops accessible can be found here:
Legal
Prior to providing the final service, we request documents such as the client’s ID, death certificate, and/or declaration of inheritance.
Please note that opening items with a lock, code, or password (e.g., a cupboard, safe, bicycle, phone, or computer) after a death may result in the unconditional acceptance of the inheritance. On the other hand, at the time of, for example, a beneficiary acceptance, this offers the opportunity to investigate whether there may be assets or debts.

Research Duration and General Terms and Conditions
Due to high demand, the research duration is currently between 2 and 6 weeks.
Our General Terms and Conditions always apply to investigations of equipment.
